How to Use Color Blocking to Your Advantage

In interior design, color blocking means using two or more solid colors together to make bold combinations that bring energy and character to a room. It's a method that can set the mood for different areas like living rooms or bedrooms, and it can also highlight certain parts of a room. Not only could it brighten the room, it also allows room for creativity and customization. Color blocking lets you express yourself and make a strong impression, but it can be tricky to pick the perfect colors and figure out how to mix them. Which is why we are here today to discuss how to use color blocking to your advantage! But before that, let’s see back to the history of color blocking becoming a trend in interior design.

While color blocking as a term gained prominence in the 20th century, its roots can be traced back to various art movements, including the works of artists such as Piet Mondrian and the De Stijl movement in the early 20th century. These artists used geometric shapes and bold, contrasting colors to create visually striking compositions. The concept of color blocking gained momentum in the fashion industry during the 1960s and 1970s, particularly with the rise of mod fashion. Designers like Yves Saint Laurent and André Courrèges incorporated bold blocks of color into their designs, revolutionizing the way clothing was perceived and worn. Eventually, color blocking began to emerge as a popular trend in interior design as well around the mid-20th century. Influenced by the principles of modernism and minimalism, designers started to experiment with using solid blocks of contrasting colors to create dynamic and visually stimulating spaces.

Like mentioned, color blocking can be quite tricky! The idea is always the same, to establish a contrasting color palette that helps create vibrant and unique patterns within the same space. So here are some tips and ideas to get you started with :

1. Pair three contemporary colors in varying proportions

There aren't strict rules in color blocking, you can use as many or as few colors as you like but many designers and color experts suggest sticking to three. You can create a dynamic and striking scheme by combining contrast colors. Or you can create a softer and more cohesive interior design by using shades of the same color or complementary colors.

2. Consider a two-tone wall with a color highlight

When combining two colors in living rooms or bedrooms, try using opposite colors with similar intensity levels. This creates a striking contrast and a bold look, making the colors appear brighter when paired together. To add an extra layer of interest, consider painting a single line of a different color to introduce a touch of a third hue.

3. Create color block with wallpaper

Color blocking isn't limited to just using paint. You can create an interesting combination on your walls by using both paint and wallpaper. Add accessories such as vases or framed pictures in groups of similar colors to add a temporary burst of color, subtly enhancing the look of a plain room.

4. Define spaces using color

If you're feeling bold and want to go all out with colorful blocks, instead of focusing on just one area, try using different colors to separate two spaces with an open floor plan. For example, by using pink and green. Not only does it look unique but also give visual impact.

5. Use natural materials to create a perfect contrast

If you're unsure about how to select a color palette for a small space, consider drawing inspiration from the beautiful visuals found in natural materials. For example, wood with its charm and warmth. Take advantage of this by incorporating wood into your color scheme to create a calming color block.

6. Play with the functionality of a space

A fun way to use color blocking is by adding colors that match the function of objects in the room. For instance, you can put bright colors where there are lights. This can make the room look lively and exciting.

7. Consider using furnitures to color block

Ensure your furniture doesn't miss out on the color party happening on the walls; involve them in creating a memorable palette. To add a captivating touch, you can use an occasional chair upholstered in a vibrant fuchsia fabric, coordinating accessories in colorful shades to make a statement without overwhelming the senses.

8. Work with different geometric shapes

While some might think color blocking means sticking to rectangular shapes, one interesting idea is to incorporate shapes that aren't symmetrical or angular. Experimenting with different shapes to make a playful look in the space,  designers create bold statements that energize the space.

9. Give the space dimension using stripes

Stripes remain a timeless trend! This adaptable pattern, either horizontally or vertically, adds visual intrigue and can effectively highlight a room's features while downplaying any imperfections. Vertical stripes in rooms with low ceilings can give the illusion of height, while horizontal stripes in rooms with high ceilings help to anchor the space.

10. Go for the classic and timeless black - white color block

White and black are commonly considered neutrals, but their stark contrast forms an impressive color blocking effect. I mean who doesn't know this classic white and black matching? A modern, sleek and elegant look with white and black color blocking, try introducing one additional solid color through accessories or furnishings to add a visual punch to the space.
